I am trying to find a bimini top for my bayliner and just can't figure out the sizing deal. The boat is at a marina and still in winter storing so I can't exactly access it for measurements. Is there anywhere I can find out what size width I would need for the top? Does anyone know what size I'd need? I am thinking a 5 foot length would be ok.

Another question, I saw somewhere that standard bimini brackets might not fit the boat without extra parts... is this true or is it a gimick to get me to buy the specialized kit for it?

Do a google search for Bimini top and some sites like boatcoversdirect.com or maybe even iboats site allows you to search by year and model. If you need extra hardware the site might tell you or you could call their customer support.

I bought mine from Overtons.com, but I checked and they don't list by model like boatcoversdirect.com does.

The two key measurements in my mind when fabricating or ording the top are i) distance between your side windows (assuming you will mount it to the frame), and ii) length of the side poles, which ultimately dictate height off the deck. If you like to stand beside the helm sometimes as I do you want to make sure you've got the headroom to do it.

When it comes to installing, the other critical point is fore/aft placement. I've got mine installed so that the leading edge is actually a bit forward of the windshield to get that extra bit of protection going into the sun.

I've come to realize it's all a bit of give and take with fabric biminis. Mount the thing too high and you are more susceptible to being buffeted by gusts of wind at anchor or idle and create more drag at speed. Also, the higher the top, the less shade you get. And just my opinion, but the higher the top the more ungainly the whole rig tends to look.

Tradeoffs with length are difficulty getting in and out of the boat if the top extends too far aft. Support bars, straps, and the roof itself can be difficult to negotiate for older folks or those a little less sure of themselves around boats and docks.

Not sure you are going to be able to do much without measuring the boat and deciding how you want your particular setup.

One other note. I went through the same thing before I ordered mine as to size which is more of a personal thing as the other poster has said.

There are a lot of threads here discussing Bimini tops so do search and read through them. It's been discussed many times.

I personally prefer to stand while driving sometimes, so I ordered the size that allows me to do that. There is a higher size, but I too think that's ugly.

You will need the boats measurement from the floor to the top of the gunnel before you can order a top because most sites offer 3 height sizes for each model. The middle choice for my baot was 66" I think and this allows me to stand without my head hitting. They also usually offer 3 fabric choices with Sunbrella the top choice.

Fabric choice as to how much you want to spend is a question of how long you will keep the boat. I don't leave mine up much so deterioration is not an issue with me.

Also pick up the slide brackets, they are about $24, but they allow you to position the top ahead of the windshield to block the sun or pull it back about 2 feet to change position and shade back area more. Also allows for storing without hitting the outboard if you have an outboard.

Another option is the two rear poles that store the top at a 45 degree angle instead of flat against the gunnels when closed.

Lastly, if you are going to be near salt water you will need to order all hardware and frames, poles etc in stainless which kicks up your cost.

Good luck.
