Bilge Vent Hose/Ducting

So, while I was power washing out the CC a few weeks back I destroyed the Bilge vent hosing (Lower portion). I need to replace; however, iBoats only sells 50'...I need about 6'...I was thinking, since it's PVC based tubing I was gonna fashion a bilge vent out of 3" PVC piping instead?

What are anyone's thoughts?

I was thinking it might look a little cleaner than the flimsy ducting? I would cut vertical slits where it attaches to the vent fan...throw a few 45* ells at bottom to get it into the lower portion of the bilge and a 45*-90* ell where is vent out of engine compartment?

Thanks,

~Brett

IMHO you are better off with the flexible stuff but rigid would likely be ok too

BTW if it was old enough to die from the pressure washer it should likely all be replaced... take a close look at your bilge pump, hose, and thru hull fittings.... they may be on their last legs too

Smoke,

Thanks for replying...Yes, I went thru both ends of the vent fan, it works very well. As far as the bilge pump and float and associated hosing, connections and such, I did go thru them and they all worked, surprisingly, The thru-hull fittings will be replaced soon as well...I just bought some 3M 5200 today...I originally went to Home Depot to get the ducting (Illegal to use for dryer vents, which makes sense?) so, they don't carry it, that's where the idea of rigid PVC piping come from?!

Thanks,

~Brett

Might check your local lowes store, they carry it here. Here they still let you use flexable dryer hose as long as it is no more than 4 feet to the vent. Anything more than that on a dryer you should run hard pipe so it doesn't hurt your dryer. Not sure I would use pvc unless it was strapped very well so the banging around while underway doesn't break it eventually.

More than likely you could go to your local boat yard and find one laying around for nothing in cost. There pretty cheap to buy though.

Local boat yard...LOL, I live in Colorado...there's really no "local boat yard" Point taken though! I went and took another look at the layout/location and such...while sch#40 PVC would work and look somewhat trick, during my double check I notice the power steering line basically helps support the upper hose, I'd have to adjust that some (might not be able too given how it's run?). But the Detmar vent fan has 4 nubs around that I'd have to sand off or relieve the PVC pipe some to accommodate? I did a quick Google search found me 10' sections of 4" PVC flex hosing for $14.95 + shipping...that I can justify, it's enough?! Might still do the PVC just cause that's me? Secured with glued in place straps...something real classy! (LOL). I'll take a look at Lowes menyana!

I think you will find that pvc flex hose is WAY too stiff and will put too much pressure on your bilge vents... possibly breaking them assuming they are plastic... how much IS the 50 bilge hose? I wouldn't think it would be too bad and you could certainly route it neatly to make it look better.

I think that if you will sit down and consider it you may find that you are over thinking this one just a WHEEEEEEE little bit

Prolly true (SIDE NOTE: Did you see the name for the CC, Obsessive Propulsion Disorder!) The stuff I saw on iboats was PVC bilge ducting hose...I only wanted to replace what was there. They only had 50' sections, of which I need like 5'....So, that might be too rigid...I want the old school dryer vent flexible plastic (PVC) ducting...thought of rigid piping 'plumbed' in with good attachments...I'm a weird dood, please forgive me!? I'm watching 'My Little Pony' with the kids cruising iboat's forum...I most likely need some form of mental health intervention!

Happy Bilge Venting!

no the pvc bilge hose is EXACTLY what you want... stronger than dryer hose and very flexible... same as what is in your boat now... household plumbing pvc flex hose is a totally different animal.... very stiff

I thought it would be cool to have the aluminum dryer flex hose for my boat--but I was wrong. It tore like tinfoil during installation..

I thought about it too but it's electrically conductive so that shot it down for me...

Other places sell it by the foot. This is an important safety system, so do it right!

My local hardware store had the fexible PVC tubing with the wire reinforcement, but it was near the bathroom vent fan stuff, not near the dryer vent stuff.

3" Heavy Duty RV sewer hose is really strong and very flexible. Jasoutside is using it on his Islander and says it's super eazy to work with.
