When I hooked my batteries I hooked them up wrong. Now my bilge pump blows fuses. If I am right the wire for the bilge hooks to the positive battery terminal. I checked the fuse there and it was good. I don't know what else to check:confused:

A lot is going to depend on what kind of pump, does it have a float switch, is it computer controlled etc.

can you see the pump its mounted in the back as low as possible and is attached to the pipe where the bilge water comes out on the side of the boat

Re: bilge pump blowing fuses

It's an guardian 500. I know last year It stopped working but wasn't blowing fuses. I was told to put some dawn and fill up with water to clean it. After I did that it started working. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I went to put my batteries in I hooked them up wrong. I had to replace the square fuse at the starter because nothing worked. Now got everything working but bulge. I am so wanting to put my boat in the water for the first time this year.

so the bilge is not blowing fuses or it blew one fuse and now doesn't work. It sounds like the pump is seized and as its a all in one you will have to replace it with the same type.

When is it blowing a fuse, when a fuse is plugged in or when you flip the switch after a new fuse is installed and are you sure the positive and neg wires are now in the right place.

Ref.> Attwood Guardian 500 Pump (Vintage/Obsolete). = 3 Wire Pump with Mechanical Float Switch integral to the Case.

You hooked the Batteries up Wrong? Or you hooked the Pump Wires to the Battery wrong?

Common Pump Wiring...
Brown = Fused Battery 12V
Black = Batt Ground
BRN/WHT = 12v Power from Manual Switch.

Black and Brown are easy to confuse, Attach the BROWN to Ground and the Fuse will Blow with the Manual Switch ON.

Bilge pumps are relatively inexpensive. If it's operation was suspect before and it's not working now, just replace it, for piece of mind. Unless you're qualified and able to take it apart, service the bearings and properly reseal the assembly, it's just not worth repairing. A new pump might save you from sinking sometime. - Grandad

Re: bilge pump blowing fuses

when we put a new fuse in for the pump under the dash and soon as we turn the switch on it will pop the fuse. The cables that were hook up wrong was to the battery. We have not touched the pump. The boat hasn't been out since sept. of last year. After putting battery cables on wrong we check all switches to make sure everything was working and that's when we found the pump not working so checked fuse was blown under dash. put new fuse in and it blew right away when switch was turned on

Are you sure they are correct?

What correct? The fuse. If so put 2 amp in it that is what came out of it.

2 amps is way too small. the pump is about 1.5A without a load.
Move up to a 5A fuse and see what happens.

Are the Black and Brown Wires on the Battery on the Correct Posts?
In the wiring confusion they may have gotten reversed.
The pump has a MANUAL Hot lead Connected to the MANUAL Switch.
It also has an AUTOMATIC Hot Lead connected to the battery.
If the Auto Lead at the Battery is connected to ground, When you turn ON the Manual Switch you will create a dead short from 12v to ground and blow the fuse.

The Pump has a Mechanical Float switch and the motor will run backwards without damage.
It is unlikely you damaged the pump by hooking it up in reverse. Triple check the Pump Wires at the Battery.

Brown = 12volts
Black = Ground

Gotta love it when the part that breaks is a cheap one, and doesn't leave you stranded!
