Bilge float switch problem

My problem, I have an aluminum boat with a shallow bilge area, maybe 3 inches deep. I have installed a Johnson float switch (type with a ball switch) and it takes about 3.5+ inches of water in bilge to make up the switch, water going under fuel tank, batteries...etc. I have found info that this type of float switch takes more water than some other float switches to activate pump. Anyone familiar with Rule float switches, or had a similar problem and fix? Thanks for your help.

I think you should head yourself down to a boat dealer and explain the situation you have and then have them show you the different pumps and switches that are out there. And there are a bunch. Anyways that's what I'd do.

Yes, I have one on my boat now. Works great on my boat due to design. I had an automatic one on my old Feathercraft aluminum which drew at less than 1" depth in bilge. No separate float switch, sensor is built into pump. Amazon has tons of them for fairly cheap. Also don't forget to look here on iboats.com, they carry them as well.:)

I also switched to the pump with a built in float and it triggers at a much lower water level, however in the past I had the same problem and here is what I did to solve the problem. I went to the local hardware store and bought a cork, a larger one for an old thermos bottle and just glued the cork to the underside of the float on the switch, then the switch would trigger with about a 1 1/2" -2 of water. Experiment with where you glue the cork to trip the switch.

May want to relocate(if you can) float and pump more nearer stern. Usually more water will accumulate there sooner.

Thanks for quick response. Boat is new, real problem is drain plug leaks, have tried 3 different types, also get a little water over transom during rough water and tubers boarding. Thought about remounting switch and experimented with adding floatation (cork) under float. Like the idea of bilge pump and float switch combo, limited space in bilge. Thanks, Bryan

Be sure that bilge hose has loop to minimize water back flow from waves and heavy passengers as they climb on.
