For a small aluminum boat, is a standard 4 cycle 9.9 hp or Bigfoot 9.9hp better? Boat is rated to 18hp. What is the difference between standard 4 cycle model and Bigfoot 4 cycle model in Mercury lineup? I found a 9.9 hp, 2000, shelf model, for $1695. Is this a good deal? Has there been any design changes between 2000 and 2002 that might effect my decision?
Thank you,
Tom

The Bigfoot version is for moving heavy loads around. Great for Kickers on bigger boats and small pontoons.

I assume that you want your boat to plane with the 9.9?

I don't believe the Bigfoot will do that. The smaller lower unit is going to turn a prop more conducive to planing a boat.

Tjwdrw, that doesn't sound like too bad of a deal on the 4 stroke 9.9 Merc. Is it from a local dealer?

I would be happy to sell you a 2002 model for less than that. E-mail me direct at trevorcday@hotmail.com if interested.

The main difference is that there was a decompression system added in 2001 to make the motor easier to start. Also the warranty was increased to 3 years in 2001. 2002 is identical to 2001.
