Finally saw some other inflatables where I launch in Lake Superior.

The Euros have some of the most rad RIBs over on the Ribnet Forum.
Rough water and short cool summers, probably expensive slips.

Mine at 15 feet pales in comparison and not designed for the fjords and North Seas.

The abundance of RIBs in the EU is due at least in part to the high price of fuel. Both hauling the boat around as well as running the boat itself.

The guy I got my RIB from says that he expects the number of RIBs in N. America will increase as gas prices go up.

Why would high end number of ribs in USA increase as gas prices goes up, these ribs needs powerfull engines that swallow lots of gallons and some costs more than a top BMW. British are the masters of these high end costly toys.

Happy Boating

Yes I have to agree with Sea Rider this RIB's are so expensive that for me doesn't make sens to spend so much money. For half or even less you can get a new nice regular boat. Maybe in the north sea where they live this is the safe way to go I know the Brits are not stupid

A 15' RIB would be sea worthy for the fjords or the North Sea wouldn't it? I've been out in 10 footers with a buddies RIB. I felt plenty safe and we were hitting the waves hard chasing a big black Zodiac that had twin 50's (SIB) taking pictures of it.

I did have to get a few stiches above my eye though when we hit the bottom of a trough hard and my underwater camera housing came up and hit me hard. Other than that moment I felt safe in the 10 footers...

My 15 would be more at home on the Med or Key West entertaining well turned ladies.

Whoa, those are some bruised and abraided ribs. The EU RIBs run the gamut, not all are such that I posted but those are the ones that I found most impressive.

Me, I'm ready for a 25 foot Tri-toon with a 250 HP something.

Are you wearing a Poseidon Unisuit under the PFD? Cool photo circa early 70's?

You are correct...as a young man me and a few of my scuba club buddies all had them which was remarkable since they were very spendy and we were very poor. Here's a picture circa 1977 of a Poseidon suit being used ice diving in Minnesota. We also used Divator regulators with our suits which worked very well since the hoses ran under the arms.

And here's a SIB same time period the scuba club I was in (The Argonauts) used in Lake Superior. We called it Big Black and used twin 50's on the back. I think it was an 18 footer. It took on anything Lake Superior threw at it. You might be able to make out his control stand as a shopping cart that was bolted to the floor. It worked very well actually.

Thanks for sharing those pics. The photos you have are crisp, well-composed and represent the advent of technical diving. The AGA Divator and Unisuit were state of the art and still very effective pieces of kit. I bet some publisher, or Poseidon systems in Sweden/US would love to have your photos in their archives!

Cheers,

CapeAnn
