big horse power

I have a 1969 swdewinder that i picked up (from a farm field) with a alpha 1 and no eng any one have a idea on how much horse power an alpha 1 will take?

Crankie, My neighbor has a 454 cu in motor mated to an Alpha 1 Gen II drive. These motors generally have 330HP. I believe this is the max HP that an Alpha will tolerate.

the boat is 19 feet draft is 12 inches free board is 14 inches. so if i build up a small block chev say a true 300 hp i should be ok?

Should be fine. My brother has a 454 450hp on his alpha 1 gen 1 still holding up.

They will take a lot of HP, depending on how you drive it.....no slamming it out of the hole, catching big air, etc. Lot of guys run some pretty major power through Alpha's. Just have to use some common sense. Might want to try this board out: www.speedwake.com - more of a HP site than this one.

Do as you please,<br />But,<br />Mercruiser put the Big Blocks in front of the Alphas for only 2 years...........<br />Since then they've Only been ava. with the Bravo drives.......<br /><br />Reliability goes Out the Door,<br />With over 300hp.........

Besides, it's not really horsepower that'll kill'em, it's the torque..... Sure a 454 only produces 10% more power than a 350, but it produces about 50% more torque.<br /><br />Chris..............
