I have a 1988 Yamaha 40 hp 3 cylinder. When we put it in the water last weekend (after sitting for 4 months) it idled a little rough. This was more noticable when put in gear and a load was on the engine. It ran pretty good wide open. The next day it still idled rough and would not open up and run at high speed. It will rev in neutral though. I pulled number one plug wire off and it didn't make much difference in the way it idled. When I pulled number two wire it dropped in idle. When number three was pulled it died. So it appears number three was doing most of of the work, number two just a little and number one hardly anything. Why would it run worse the second day? I spoke to a Yammy mechanic and he said it sounded like a fuel problem. I thought it sounded like ignition the way it will cut in and act like it will run then cut out again. But there is spark to all three cylinders. Do I have an ignition or carb problem? The Mechanic suggested rebuilding the carbs but I hate to start there if it's not a carb problem.

You do have a spark from every spark plug.

I think you have to clean your carbs. What did you do to them 4 months ago? Did you drain the float bowls? Do that now and look for water or dirt. Use a clean and dry bottle.

Take a look at the fuel filter too.

/Bear

Re: Big help you guys are....

I bought it 4 months ago. Thought we'd get it in the water before now but have had pretty cold and rainy spring. I have cleaned the carbs completely now. They had very little gunk in them. I took the three coil/spark plug wires (combination) off to test them with a ohm meter. I got current through two of them. One, nothing. Sure looks like that one is dead. Weird that I get spark to all three. Could it be that the wires are bad on the others and I am getting cross fire to the one that appears bad? I thought I'd try a new coil on the dead one and see what happens. If I still get some missing, it might be that I'm getting cross fire from bad wires. What do you think? Oh, also checked the compression, getting about 100 lbs on all three cylinders.

Forgot to ask if anyone knows what the initial mixture setting should be on these carbs? I took them out to clean them and screwed them back in the same number of turns but would like to start fresh if I knew where to start. Thanks.
