just got out today and tried this new garica 5500;with a 5.3.1. gear ratio;big difference between a penn no 9 and a garica reel.seems you have to work more with garica reel.got a couple of nice fluke today;and notice the drifference.one thing i got to say about garia reel.it is a very tight reel. thank god i did not get the 6.3.1. ratio would be reeling all day to land that big fish.

Howdy, Lonewolf. The 6.3:1 ratio would give you more turns of the spool for one turn of the handle, you would have to reel less to land your fluke.

Keep in mind that the Penn #9 and the Garcia 5500 were designed for different use. The Ambassaduer is a casting reel designed for fresh water lures and applications. The Penn, I think, is a boat reel, designed for bigger fish, more line and salt water.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: big difference in reels penn vs garica

A higher gear ratio makes it harder to gain ground when a fish is pulling back, this is why most salt reels are low geared (3:1 ie. winches). I have a 6.3:1 and a 5.3:1. The higher ratio stops picking up line when reeling when a hot fish puts the hammer down while the lower ratio will still pick up some line. Basically you can be reeling like an SOB and not be gaining any ground but with a lower gear you gian just at a slower pace.

DON'T GET ME WRONG I REALLY LIKE THE GARCIA.IT ITS LIGHT ,SMALL EASY TO HANDLE. WHAT I DID WAS TO PICK UP ANOTHER GARICA THAT HAS A SLIP GEAR RATIO I BELIVE IT IS 6.3.1. WITH A 4.8.1 WHEN NEEDED WILL SEE HOW IT WORKS COME THIS SUMMER :)
