Does anyone know which wires I need to tap to connect a tach to my BF9.9D tiller engine? I don't think I'm getting close to running in the recommended RPM range during break-in and want to go to a lower pitch prop. No sense in buying a prop without knowing what RPM I'm running at WOT.

That info should be stated on Owners Manual, most do, check.

Normally I would agree, but this is the extent of the tachometer information in the owners manual:

I have a factory repair manual on the way and hope that has the info I need. Was being impatient since I have a 12 pole tach (according to Faria this is what's required for this engine) sitting here with nothing to do.

Re: BF9.9D tiller model tachometer install

Ok-received the shop manual. Of course, the only wiring diagram for a tach is for an engine with a remote, not a tiller. However, I would appreciate it if someone smarter than me can please follow my logic here and let me know if I'm making sense.

The diagram for the remote engine has 3 wires for tach function-black, gray and black/yellow stripe.

-Black is ground
-The gray wire goes to the rectifier BUT also joins a yellow/black stripe that connects to the ignition control module which also ties to a brown wire that goes to the SE valve heater coil. My thought is that the rectifier connection is what is needed for the tach signal.
-Black/yellow stripe winds up(after branching off a few times)at the ignition switch-looks to be active only when the switch is in the on/start position, so we'll call that +12v switched.

There's what appears to be a 2-wire harness on my tiller engine diagram with a black and a gray wire that connects to a dummy plug, which trace back to ground and the rectifier, respectively. If I connect to these wires and then connect +12v to the black/yellow terminal spot on the tach, I should be in business, right?

Thanks in advance
