I moved this from another thread because I think I originally put it in the wrong place...

I just acquired a 1981 BF75 (7.5HP, 4-stroke) and the pull starter won't pull at all. I checked it out while still in the water (no trailer for the boat) and here's what I found out:

1. starter cord won't pull at all.
2. engine not seized because it still turns back and forth just a bit.
3. prop turns in neutral.
4. prop won't turn in forward or reverse.
5. gear shift moves nicely between gears.

Any ideas on further troubleshooting or what might be broke?

Thanks for any advice!
BT

Try removing the spark plugs, then pull the starter rope. If it you can turn over the engine that way, you might have had excess fuel in the cylinders. If you still cant turn the engine over, you have a bad starter pull mechanisem. Sometimes the rope will jamm inside the pulley or corosion will build up inside and cause the mechanisism to sieze.
Nick
