1985 BF75FLA oil case seal for vertical shaft is leaking. I replaced it a couple of years ago along with an epoxy repair to a corrosion hole in the oil case. Had a bang of a time removing the vertical shaft from the crankshaft. Thought the seal would last longer than the epoxy repair, but no. The old seal was rusted and was destroyed in removal. This one still looks good but leaks. Are there any short cuts like adding an o-ring? Or what is the correct way to remove the seal. I remember the replacement had to be pounded into place.

Oil case? Are we talking about the oil pan?The gearcase? What do you have to remove to get to the area you are trying to quick fix?

Re: BF75 oil case leak

The oil pan is what I'm referring to, it has a rubber ribbed cricular seal through which the vertical shaft passes and seats to the crank shaft of this 71/2 hp engine. Oil is leaking through the seal and down the shaft. The oil pan is part of the lower shell of the motor. I've removed the lower unit and the engine. The Honda shop manual I have does not show the seal. I have not bought the parts manual yet.

That seal is there to keep water out,not oil in.That oil pan is sealed to the powerhead by a gasket. That's it.If you have motor oil running down your driveshaft, you have a leak elsewhere.

Re: BF75 oil case leak

Thanks for the clear explanation, I will put a new oil pan gasket on, last time I had to recycle the old one. I have found a local dealer that can get parts. Looking again at the shop manual the crankshaft/piston has a lower oil seal and it looks like that would be a likely place for oil leaking down the drive shaft. Can this seal be removed and replaced without disassembly of the crankcase?
