BF75 Drop Lower Unit Assistance

In attempting to replace 1984 Honda 7.5cc motor's impeller step 1 in my newly purchased Honda shop manual states "drop lower unit" with no further explanation.

Unfortunately after intuitively removing the related bolts the unit only drops a couple of inches and refuses to budge further. Can an experienced BF75 impeller changer please fill in the gaps for me here. I'm guessing the shaft has a good hold and considered forcing it, but thought I should investigate first.

I should note that I found similar threads but none with a sufficiently detailed or closely related answer to be of much help.

Much appreciated.

Cheers,
- Paul.

Re: BF75 Drop Lower Unit Assistance

a 2nd and follow on question to the above:

How much water should be flowing out the water outflow hose when this motor is running. It does have some flow, and about twice as much now the thermostat has been changed, but it it not a steady stream. Should it be?

Thanks,
- Paul.

yes-it should be a good steady stream...from looking at the parts breakdown it appears the shift rod needs to be disconnected from the linkage up at the motor

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not seeing what could be called a steady stream. It appears I do need to get the lower unit off then. But "the shift rod needs to be disconnected from the linkage up at the motor" sounds complicated. Any suggestions on finding more detailed instructions on how to do this? As i mentioned I have just purchased the shop manual but it doesn't seem to cover this.

Thanks,
- Paul.

Re: BF75 Drop Lower Unit Assistance

the shift rod is one solid piece from the lower unit up to the engine where it connects to the shift linkage...work the shifter so you can see the linkage moving then follow the linkage to where it connects to a vertical rod going down through the midsection and that'll be the shift rod

Perfect. I'll give that a go. Thanks.

for parts diagrams you could try boats.net and go to the Honda section but I don't know if they have them for an engine of that age
