I've apparently cheesed up my BF50 carbs... won't start w/o starter spray, all sparks are there too.
Also, fuel is seeping down the side of lowest carb, looks to be coming from a shiny round dime-sized seal on the side/top-half.
Probably left the fuel line connected too long and stuck a float valve open.
Anyway, looks like rebuild time.
The online parts places didn't answer their phones, so I tried a local marina/dealer. They said there's no rebuild kit for my year BF50 and they only started making rebuild kits after people complained about having to buy separate parts.
This sound right? Mine's a 97, possibly 96 since that's stamped inside the cowling.
If there's no kit, what parts should I order?
I assume I need a new intake manifold gasket too.
Or will the newer year rebuild kit (2000 or so) work?

Yes you will need the intake mani gasket and probably the air box gasket as well.To my knowledge there are still no rebuild kits out there for this unit because there is little to rebuild. You are inspecting ,cleaning and replacing, the components as they fail. With your unit ,look carefully for tiny cracks in the bottom of the lift tube if you have had any water intrusion. What symptoms are we trying to cure?

Re: BF50 carb cleanup

The boat's new to me, I've only had a chance to have it out once. Bought her 6 months ago.

The engine had sat but the previous owner started it every so often, but it ran rough. When I first bought her the 50 was hard to start and ran rough, but ran.I checked plugs and the lowest cyl plug was fouled. After replacing all plugs it ran great the only time I had it out.

Then I left the gas connected, probably causing the problem I have now, unable to start. Sat for about a month before I realized what I did & disconnected it, but I should have started & run it I guess. OBoards are new to me.

But the fact that the lower cylinder plug was fouled, and that carb was leaking fuel makes me think that that carb had been causing problems for a while.

I now have the carbs off... I'm not sure what I;m looking at (manual is coming...) but there a little brass inlet on the bottom of the tube with an orifice that's clogged shut with green stuff.
The base of that tube has a removable brass seal, then there are two concentric tubes inside. The outermost comes out, the innermost thin tube seems held in place at the other end.

Should I replace all of brass parts and all gaskets, and screws or can the brass parts be cleaned?

The float valve didn't look bad, but it's easy to replace.

The bowl itself was clean, no stick stuff on the bottom anyway.

Thanks for your help hondon!

Re: BF50 carb cleanup

This carb needs to come completely down to be cleaned properly. That means all those brass tubes and jets need to come out ,sometimes with a little delicate persuassion, and sometimes that will not happen at all. Then it is new carb time.At any rate you will need the carb gasket kit #16010 zv4 010 one for each carb.Double check that # with the parts counter as I'm rattling that of from memory.

Re: BF50 carb cleanup

I will.
The first carb I broke down had very a fine hairline crack on the bottom end of the tube, starting at the tiny orifice running up about .25".
Good thing you told me, it was so fine it looked like a scratch.
So I'm replacing all of the jets. Gaskets, o-rings, needle-valve & floats while I'm in there, so I need to order parts.

A thousand thanks, Hondan!
Will let ya know when she's running.

I have some Berryman Chem-Dip to soak the metal parts. Will that stuff strip off all of the paint?
