BF5 - Synthetic Oil?

I have a great little 5HP honda, and it spends 50% time trolling, and 50% used as primary power for a small skiff. Probably gets in the neighbourhood of 20-30 hours a year, and I change the oil annually. The motor probably has around 100 hours on it now, (2003 model). When I change the oil, it comes out quite dark, compared with other motors I'm using. I happen to have some AMS Oil 4-stroke synthetic. Any harm in trying this?

Do not use synthetic as it contributes to fuel dilution of the oil in low RPM use.

Oil threads are poison, Elvin- you know better than to respond to one of these.... :p

True...But, I had Tohatsu put a warning on their website about how evil synthetic is in 4-strokes, so now I can can always point to it and go ha, ha, ha:)

And you thought this would get by unnoticed??

I saw your EDIT-

Ironic, isn't it? 95% of our engine sales are 4-stroke and I hate the technology:)

Re: BF5 - Synthetic Oil?

thanks for the responses guys. Not looking to start an 'evil oil thread' here, just looking for some input. Unless somebody tells me my motor will spontaneously combust, I'm going to run a cycle of AMSoil 4-stroke synthetic through it. It's a BF5, that typically runs fairly hot, and seems to produce fairly dark-colored oil whenever I change it. I have some of this oil on hand, so I'm thinking I might give it a try.

If I try the synthetic, and find that the motor makes water, I'll switch back to good ol' 10W30. Any harm in that?

cheers

Re: BF5 - Synthetic Oil?

Elvin will disagree with me- but as long as you seem to be aware that you have to watch the "making oil" issue, you will be just fine. You are aware of it- thus its no big deal.

Given the high detergency, and thinner nature of a synthetic, many will deter you from using it. Some will argue that rust protection is inadequate. Also, there is the arguement that synthetics don't tolerate the thinning effect created by "making oil". All of these issues are routinely debated here, and have caused MANY BAD OIL THREADS.

Amsoil is a Wisconsin company (Superior, WI). Their products have very wide use up here in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I am in no way trying to degrade this into an oil thread (DANGER DANGER!).
