Hi folks,

Been lookin through here all day... great forum!
Honda BF5AM BADS-1203337 5hp 4-stroke. Not positive of year, previous owner is pretty sure it's a '92. Older gent owned it, used it maybe a dozen times a year up until 2000. At the end of that season he had noticed a little oil slick on the water whenever he was sitting in one place for a minute or so with the motor running. Apparantly, it wasn't much, and it always ran fine, so he brought it in to the local Honda dealer and asked them to have a look at it. A week later they called and told him the engine was shot - cylinder was egg-shaped! He told them not to bother, that he'd live with it with the oil leak, but they refused to reassemble it unless he paid them $400. So he got it back in a box. Been sitting in his basement 'til I got my hands on it last week. Spent several hours cleaning it up and putting it back together - at least nothing was missing. Checked the bore with a telescopic gauge and if it's out-of-round, I can't tell... it looks just like new, no scoring or scuffs at all. Same with the crank, cam, the works, no obvious wear. But when I did a compression test, I only got 55psi. Few squirts of oil brought it up to 85psi. So looks like at the very least the rings are bad.(?) I'm just wondering, before I put any money into this thing, if the cylinder really is out, and I just can't tell. Could anyone with a manual give me a piston-to-bore clearance, or any other spec that might help me in determining if it's worth rebuilding? I don't mind spending money on it if the block is good, but buying rings, gaskets and a manual just to find out it's shot...ugh!
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

Re: BF5 low compression

I wouldn't be concerned with compression numbers on an engine that has just been (re)assembled as long as they aren't VERY low. The 30 psi difference when you added oil says the rings aren't seated, not that they are worn out.

Run the engine in a while, then check it again.

Good luck. :)

Hi, and thanks for the reply!

I assumed the 55psi was VERY low, that was my biggest concern. From the sounds of it, you don't think it is. If that's the case, I'll hone the cylinder, install new gaskets and seals(only $43cdn, not bad) and try to find a manual - dealer says they don't have a listing for that model, just a parts manual. I wouldn't think one should be too hard to find.
Thanks for the advice JB, I do apprecciate it!

You can get a manual below. (Hope the link works; if not, just copy it and paste into your address box.) Good luck.

BF5 Service Manual

You really need to do that compression test at wide open or you will get the kind of numbers you describe.Defeat the starter lockout ,and try that test again at wide open.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Waiting for a manual and gasket kit now. I'm sure I'll be back before it's done :)
