I have a 2001 40HP that was not used while I was out of the country for 8 months. The engine would hesitate when the throttle was pushed and would only run about half speed. I pulled the carbs and cleaned all of the gunk with carb cleaner and ran a fine wire or sewing needle through the holes of the jets. I put on a new fuel filter and drained the tank. Now it idles and starts great, but runs worse than it did before I messed with it. I assume that I reassembled the jets incorrectly or need to perform sychronization or adjustments. Is there any online documentation that I can follow as I try it again?

It is well worth the time and money to get a manual for it, the manual will take you step by step through all of the adjustments.

Re: BF40 Carb Troubles

Thanks. I have found 2 manuals:

1. HONDA 4-STROKE Manual, 1988-98 (SeLoc Marine)
2. Clymer Honda Outboard Shop Manual (1976-1999 Honda 2-130 hp 4-Stroke Outboards)

Which do you recommend?

*Note my BF 40 is a 2001...

Re: BF40 Carb Troubles

I have the Clymer manual and I have found it to be right on as far as the diagrams and steps in preforming maintenance.
