I have a 2001 Honda BF15 that runs great. The problem is it keeps fouling the bottom plug every couple of hours of use ending up running on the top plug. It also uses more gas than it used too. I have taken it in to two different Honda dealers in my area, they have cleaned the carb and given it back with no correction of the problems. Any suggestions out there? Thanks

A 4 stroke that fouls a plug is in serious trouble, MB.

Check compression and do a leakdown test. You probably have a broken ring or a failed valve guide.

I do hope you aren't running 2 stroke premix in it.

Good luck. :)

You are lugging this thing. That means you are making it do much more work than it was made to do.What has changed in your boating habits?Have you tried a different prop?A decent health check is always in order.

Re: BF15 fouling plug and poor gas milage

I first got the 25 foot sailboat in Jacksonville, FL and motored it around to the St Petersburg area. (500 Miles) No problem. I was told that the carbs on the small Honda's are prone to contamination and the dealers were quite sure the carb cleaning would fix the problem. The dealers did not test the engine long enough to duplicate the problems I have had. I will check compression on heads. I was also told by a dealer I may want to buy another carb. $$$ I am from the old school that carbs can be cleaned. The dealer also didn't think it was a prop problem.

I had trouble with 97-98 15hp making oil, turned out the thermostast was way to cold. I ened up buying a new one from local dealer, I really think he gouged,($75) for a small thermostat. Has run great ever since, but I change to oil about every 50 hours. Are you using NGK plugs?
Run a can of SeaFoam with your gas, it does an excellent job of cleaning carbs and engine.

You have one carb that mixes fuel and air for both cylinders ,yet you are only fouling the bottom plug.Do you still feel you have a carb problem?
