I am replacing the water seal on the prop shaft of a 1979 BF100 outboard. When I took it to pieces, I hacked the old seal out without seeing which way round it went.
The new seal has a metal ring on one side. There is a set of lips going in both directions and both have a coil spring holding them onto the shaft. One set of lips is quite small and the spring is hidden and well protected, the other set is larger and the spring is quite visible. The smaller lips are on the same side as the metal ring.
I guess that the metal ring goes towards the propeller. Can somebody confirm or deny this guess please.
