Hi there,
I have a problem since Ive taken the lower unit off for an impellor-check: The motor starts up normal and revs up normal as well, but only without the cowl on! I recognized exhaust-smoke coming from out of the shaft where the shift rod goes down, so my guess is that the motor dies because of bad or no fresh air inside the motor, when the cowl has been put on and clamped tight. I couldnt find anything about how the exhaust works in the Honda-Manual, so I have no idea what went wrong when i put it back together? Any ideas?
Thank you already,
Rotty

Hello! I wish I new the Honda better, but there has to be a rubber seal of some sort that keeps the exhaust from going back up the mid-section of the leg. Do you remember any lip seal of any sort???? OMC uses a rubber seal at the mid-section, and I'm guessing it could be simular. It has to have a seal.

The older Hondas were bad for "burning" a hole on/into the side of the exhust pipe. Located under the cylinder head, it usually has water merging inside the pipe and so cools the exhust. Often due to salt corrosion and/or lack of cooling water, the exhust will burn out the sides of the pipe and so the exhust, instead of going down into the midsection, enters into the upper cowling and then the carb will not suck fresh air, usually you can see the faint traces of exhust while standing/inspecting below the spark plugs, below the head... the symptoms are.. the engine will run OK with out the hood on, but die with the hood on..... Check it out!

Ment... Die with the hood on, run with the hood off!

Howdy-
the exhaust smoke is clearly visible coming out of the midsection through the opening, where the shiftrod is going down! Ive thought a lot about this and I remember that I made a mistake when I took the motor apart first time: I ddisconnected the shift rod from the shifting-lever, but I didnt unscrew the long nut which sits on the upper end of that shiftrod for adjusting the gears! So when I pulled off the lower unit, this nut pulled out the little rubber seal that seals the shiftrod-opening at its entrance in the midsection! Ive re-installed it, but very likely Ive done a bad job doing so, have to check it and will post the results in here! Hopefully you guys can understand my writing- sometimes I don´t have the correct words for it!

greetings,
Rotty
