BF100 CDI

Has anyone tried using a 1997 or later CDI box in a pre-97 Honda BF100? The CDI box is shot on my pre-97, part number 30580-881-734 . I can't find a replacement anywhere besides a used one on ebay (too risky at nearly $200). A few websites sell the later, part number 30580-881-A01. Just wondering if this could work or not. It's still $160 but at least it would be new. Not willing to fork over the cash unless I know it will work.
