Hi,
I just sold my boat along with the 10 hp Honda that I really liked. I came across another motor the other day and I just had to buy it.

The guy said it was on a boat he bought and he did not need it (yadda-yadda). He said it bogged on acceleration when he tried to run it.

After getting it home, I went thru the carb (pretty clean) and checked the plugs (they were new, but had signs of several attempts to get it running)

I fired it up and it started right away, but sure as heck, it would not accelerate, just kinda boggs. It actually backfired out the carb.

This is a CDI ignition OB. Could this be weak ignition or possible someone had it apart and did not set the timing belt correctly ?

Does someone know how I can verify the timing (hard to eyeball as the cam is not directly aft of crank (slightly to one side)

Any advise would sure help !

AFAIK timing is set by aligning marks on flywheel to the mark on pulser coil. The pulser coil is on the camshaft pulley under the rubber cover.

Thanks Lexi !

I goofed on the model. It is a B100. I think it is 1980 something.

I'm familiar with TDC and the concept of crank and cam relation but AFAIK is a new one to me. The flywheel has two marks (T and F) and the only thing attached to the farside of cam pulley is the cintrifugal advance mechinism.

TDC is acheived with "T" exactly aft.

Could pulser coil be the same as condensor ? I know you boys across the pond have different but similar names for stuff. Beer is still beer right :)

If you or anyone had a picture of theirs at TDC I could probably get what I need.

How about tune up specs (valve and spark plug gaps) ?

It seems like you have the model with points and a condenser (capacitor).

I think timing is 15deg btdc (points just opening) NGK DR5HS plugs about 25thou. Valve clearances are IN/EX O.O2-0.04 inch. If you aint got the points I will look up alternate spec.

Ah I see you have the cdi and pulser coil .Yes pulser is similar to a condenser in an old fashioned points and distributor system.

Re: Bf100 (10 Hp) Project Motor

I got an update and an other question (or two).

Turns out the head gasket was blown. Got that fixed and now runs pretty darn good.

This unit has points. My spec sheet that I got from the Honda site did not include point gap. I set them at .016" (that was a dim that stuck in my head from my older car days). Anyone know what it should be ?

Also, when checking my impeller, I found that the driveshaft is frozen to lower portion. I was able to remove the lower unit, but there is no way to replace the waterpump in this condition. I got lucky (for now) in that the impeller was in OK shape but is there a trick to get these two halfs apart ?

Cheers !
