The initial test of the ignition system was always done with a spark tester. That was followed by component tests if the spark test indicated a problem. Keeps it simple.
google DVA adapter..they are about $35 and work with most modern multi meters...you can test volatge in from stator then voltage out from PP..this will isolate the problem.
