Hello everyone! I'm pretty much ready to get my 2 new scotty 1101's mounted to my boat and I'm unsure of the best way to mount the bracket to the boat.
I plan on using the "right angle/side gunnel mount" #1025 http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-...ystems/1025-right-angle-side-gunnel-mount.htm to which I'll mount the swivel mounts that came with the downriggers. The instructions say to permanently mount the gunnel mounting plate (the 3"x6" piece) to the gunnel on the inside of the boat with 4 bolts. They suggest a backing plate on the other side of the gunnel (the backing plate makes sense). The side plate (the part coming down from the top plate) then mounts to the gunnel plate by way of the 2 star bolts. This allows easy removal of the bracket but leaves the gunnel plate exposed on the interior of the boat. There is no attachment of the mount to the top side (flat) of the gunnel. I couldn't anyways as the top flat part of my gunnel is only about 3 1/2-4" wide and at least 6" are needed for this.
My boat (Maxum 1800MX, yes I know this is a ski boat, not a fishing boat!) has accessible space between the interior gunnel wall and the exterior wall. My assumption was that the gunnel plate was to go on the back side of the interior wall, acting as the backing plate, and the side plate would mount flush to the interior wall. This would sandwich the interior gunnel wall (fiberglass) between the 2 pieces. I'd rather not have the black gunnel plate exposed as 90% of the boat's use will not involve fishing . When the mounts are removed from the boat there would be 2 small exposed holes where the star bolts would have been on the gunnel wall.
My question (finally). Will there be any difference in the strength of the mount based on the 2 mounting methods I've described?
Thanks in advance.
