The mid 60 to mid 70 is when I have the most sucess. For a topwater bite, the water have to be warm enough for them to hang out in the shallow, at least 50 degree. Look for spots with a lot of sun shining on it because they will be in the shallow sunning themselve. Spotted and smallmouth will come out of deep clear water to take a topwater bait.

I think the temp. issue on topwater is over thought. I fished a tournament in the middle of August this summer. 90 degree temps, 87 degree water and we slammed them on buzz and burned spinner baits. Of course the spring and fall can raise up the hunger level of bass to create great topwater action.

It all depends on the feeding cycles of the fish. At that Aug. tournament. There was cloud cover for several days before and during that day. The fish were in a feeding cycle and they were aggressive. The water temp. was no different than weeks earlier when you couldn't buy a bite.

A lot also depends on the body of water you are fishing and what kind of cover the fish have.
