I want a rod holder that will hold either a fly rod or spinning rod with equal security. I don't care about other features other than havign an adjustable angle. Has anybody got any experience to report with any brand?
Thanks

Re: best rod holder for fly AND spin?

I've been looking for the same solution but haven't found one that will fit my Sage Z-Axis with the fighting butt. I thought that maybe with the fighting butt it would be easier but no such luck. Too many $$$ to risk a loose fit. The problem with a fly rod in a rod holder is as much getting it out quick as it is making it stay in. You only have a split second to react sometimes and if you can't get the rod out and into action quick it's game over.

What I did find were trolling fly rods that fit in standard rod holders. For the life of me I can't remember where right now. They were inexpensive so I can't imagine they were much of a rod.. I've been fooled by price before though. I'll take my medication and see if I can remember where I saw them.

The Down East rod holders that Bondo suggested are versatile, AND all you have to do to get the rod out of the holder is lift: one motion retrieves rod and sets the hook. I have five on my boat and would like two more.

I use Cabelas 360,with a Scotty flush mount on my boat, have 4 of them, they are great for spinning rods,I did put a flyrod in it,I had to stand the reel up in the air,and it fit perfectly into the rod holder, they have a twist locker on the front to lock your rods in.A quick twist and the rod will come right up and out.

Why would anyone want to fish with a fly rod?. ;-)

Hmm...I can see where the flyrod would be a problem for rod holders. Are you just using the rod holder to keep the rod handy while running the boat somewhere? I can't imagine trolling with a fly rod...

You obviously don't flyfish nor do you understand the basic principles of flyfishing, perhaps indulging yourself in an instructive class or two may add some comprehension to your not very positive apprehension. ;)

Well, every rod holder that I have seen the butt of the rod goes through a hole and leverage holds the rod in,the flyrod has a reel at the end and won't go through the hole for leverage. The Cabels 360 degree rod holder,if you stand the reel straight up in the air, turn your handle,if you got one to miss the sides will hold your flyrod. It will fit perfectly into the inside of the holder, but you will have no leverage.but the locking ring will hold your rod in there, and it will not go anywhere.Check it out,and twist your rod around until it fits perfectly inside the inside of the holder,it will only go in as far as the reel.otherwise the whole rod would just go through the whole contraption.

Ahmen...if they ever had a 5 lb Eagle Lake Trout on a 9-6 Sage Z-Axis, they'd know why trolling with a fly rod is nothing less than spectacular.

The next best thing is an 8'6" Loomis back bouncer... Hang on baby..

I don't have any fancy rods like that but we modify 9-10' fly rods for trolling. A fly rod epoxied very well and tight into a long handle with a small-to-medium spinning reel and 6-pound test flourocarbon.

Probably not acceptable to a fly fishing purist, but it works very well for trolling streamers, original Rapalas, rooster tails for trout, and even spinner rigs for walleye. And the action is still there :)

But we do have a couple of "regular" fly rods with fly reels too. Although they do not fit in a traditional fashion into the Downeast rod holder, we do use them in the Downeast whenever we are using those rods.

You can actually troll with most fly rods and reels. It's not any different than fishing a stream if you think about it. And, no, you don't need a fancy rod to make it exciting. I'm just really proud of my Sage. It made me realize that there was a whole different world of fishing at my finger tips. I used less expensive. (cheap), fly rods all my life so when I could finally afford a Sage I stepped up and it really opened up a whole new world for me. Shooting out 60' when your buddies are only going 30' can make you a bit arrogant though.

Re: best rod holder for fly AND spin?

I have an old Sears fiberglass fly rod that my father had in the fifties. I am not much of a fly caster but I use it for nostalgia and sentimental reasons. The reel had dissapeared over the years before I got the rod but my psycho fishing buddy had an antique aluminum fly reel which I installed on it.

6'6" and 30' would be a stretch :)
