I have a 17' 6" single console bass boat that is awesome for fishing, but it is too fast for tubing.

to go slow enough for my kids to get on the tube it will not come up on plane and the temp is on the high side at that plane.
Here's what I have:

93 150 Merc XRI v6
Jackplate
Stablizing fin - Just installed - hugh improvement
Quick silver SST 25" pitch
top speed 60 @ 5100 rpms

can I get a prop with a smaller pitch for tubing that will slow it down? Would alum work - its alot cheaper???

Any Help appreciated
Murf

Re: Best props or set up for tubing

Hi,
I have a 17 ft Hydro-Sport bass rig that I use for tubing sometimes. I run a 24" Chopper
normaly. For tubing I use a 18" Turbo which
gives me 4000 RPMs at ski & tubeing speed. I have also used a 17" 4 blade Comp-Prop for the same thing. An AL prop would also work.
Oh-ya the motor is a 150 L6 Merc.

BTW, 5100 RPMs is to low for this motor, it should be atleast 5600. So I would get some buddies props and try them out or get your tach checked.

...have fun...corm

Re: Best props or set up for tubing

Corm,

What year is your Merc 150? I Talked to Comprop tech support and they recommended I use a 22", their concern is I would be over reving the engine. The problem is the 22" only come in a 4 1/2 collar size. and of course I'm at work and can not check it. Do you know if the 93 150 XRI V6 has the 4 1/2 collar??

Thanks
Murf

Re: Best props or set up for tubing

Hi Murf,
I've got a inline 6 cyl 1976 yr, not a V6 like yours. My motor max RPM is 5800. It turns the 24"chopper 6100 RPMs which is over reved as it is. When I have to use it for tubeing & ect. I don't even try to run it wide open as it would run over 7000 RPMs. To
high for my likeing these days.
You would have the same problem running a 17
To high of engine RPM at WOT. However your childern probably don't want to go over 30MPH
so you need to prop the motor to turn 3500-
4000 RPM at that speed. For every inch you change the pitch you will change the engine RPM 150 - 200 RPMs depending on the type of prop. Proping for childern sking & tubing is a different mind set. WOT is out of the picture. You have to use the prop as a gear to allow the boat to go 30 MPH at 4000RPMs. this allows for throttle adjustment down to
3000RPMs and still have the motor run well
and have lots of power to help keep the boat on plane at a lower speed yet. This is NOT a prop that is used for anything but tubing.

I don't know what brand boat you have (they all run somewhat different), but I would not put over a 20" pitch prop on it. You have the large gear case. The XR6 150Hp has the small case like mine on it. The Tech at Comp-Prop is correct in His thinking about over reving the motor, but he's not 5yrs old riding on the tube scared to death cause the boat won't go under 40MPH.

I hope this make some sense, as it is past my bed time tonight.
Re: Best props or set up for tubing

That was alot of help. I had to purchase the Comprop 22' pitch - I have the larger lower unit. Because of the size and amount of flex, it I should raise my RPM's about 700-800. I will probably be able to run it all the time. Either way it should be a huge improvement to what I have for tubing.

I really appriecate your, Thanks
Murf
