Best pair of combos

I am going to the NY boat show in a couple of weeks and have been throwing around the idea of buying a new pair of skis. I am 235 Lbs and currently have a pair of Connelly Quantum combos. Any suggestions for a new pair that will suit my needs. I rarely ski slalom, always deep water start and am fairly aggressive in turns and such, I would rate my ability as above average. Boat is a 90 HP Johnson propped to 13 pitch for hole shot on a Four Winns Horizon 170.

Re: Best pair of combos

I used to ski slalom with a Connelly Comp. Many people hated it because it was so narrow ar the heal but wow would it turn. I swear by Connolly and I doubt I would go with anything better than the quantum combos. That's IMO the best combo set available.

I was thinking of going with the Connelly response combos.

I have not tried the wide front skis. Just based on the design I thing the quantums will turn faster since they have a narrow tail. That's what makes the ski's tippy when they are narrow.

If it were me I would go to where people are skiing and try a pair out first.

Its hard to do better than Connelly for any type of ski. You probably have as good as it gets.

That being said, the best riding two ski set up I have ever been on were jump skis. If you can find an old pair of jump skis on craigslist or ebay, those are a fun ride. They are huge and you can get them flying across the wake. I wouldn't want to store them in my IO though.

Oh, the good ole days of hitting a wooden ramp when flying across the water on jump skis. I have to do that again before I die or get too damn old to hold the landing ;)

The older Cypress Garden **** Pope skis were good to use on jumps but you had to change the skegs to dual wooden rudders. I have jumped on the Cypress Gardens ramp (actually where I first tried)..... my family lived on the same chain of lakes. My baby sister went to school with **** Popes grandson so access to the ramps was easy.

The connelly are great skis and if you decide to go on one ski the quantum looks like a decent ski. Now if you get into slalom more I would just invest in a better slalom ski to use with your present skis.

Re: Best pair of combos

Looks like Connelly sells three different models of adult combos: Quantum, Odyssey, and Response. I can't tell if there is any difference in the ski between the first two (width, bottom design, etc) The Response are wider and have much nicer bindings for the extra $$.

More money for skis typically gets you better bindings and a bit better ski construction. I'd go with the Responses in the Connnelly line, or the O'Brien Performers - their top of the line ski with nicer bindings. The O'Briens maybe not quite as wide. Look at them both, try bindings on each to see which work better for you.

If you are an aggressive combo skier you will be able to make ANYTHING turn and have fun on them. I think the wider skis give a bit better pop off the wake when jumping. Concave bottoms on any of these will be a better ride and cutting power than flat bottom wood skis.

Yea, I like the Response bindings also. I was going to look at the bottom of the Response skis to see if they do have a concave bottom.

Another difference is the stainless steel tailfin, does this have an advantage over plastic?

Durability. They will be concave.

Since you already have a good pair of combos and are looking for something different, check out the HO Water Sports Wake Skis. Those look fun and cool.

Flat bottom skis (as oppossed to concave or tunnel concave) are much less fatigueing. They have less drag, are easier to start with, and will turn and cut just as good as any concave type combo skis. I own both and prefer my wooden flatbottom skis over my O'briens or Connellys, even though they are great skis. You will just be able to ski longer with no loss in performance using flatbottom skis.
