After more than a few people have told me to get away from "computerized" motors, I am checking out other motors. Please give your input on different motors, especially Yamaha.

FlyBoyMark is right. Picking the right motor involves more than listening to various "experts".

This forum is about the one place in the world to get info from many users - and build your own oppinion on it.

specks
Git away from computer motors, say like your car the last 20 years? Our fine elected people in Washington and their help have, like cars, decreed that O/Bs will be as pure as the driven snow, capable of running on the crud called gas these days. The 'puter driven system in big o/b is the way it happens. What end of the spectrum are you talking about, 2hp-300hp? In 3 years the choice will be 4 strokes and direct injection 2 strokes. Advantage is 30-40% better fuel use (less cost), downside-high tech cost-like cars.
Yamaha, Merc, Evinrude, all use computers. Today's engines over 75hp I like Bombardier made Evinrude and Yamaha. Merc's Opti's still have problems unsolved. My view.
Backfire ;)

I'm down in Louisiana and do a lot of saltwater fishing. It will be pushing a 21ft cc Sea-Era. Right now I have an Evinrude 150hp ficht, but I've had nothing but problems from this motor.

The best outboard for you is the one that does a good job on your boat and it will be the brand that has very strong dealer technical support in your area.

Find out who is the best servicing dealer in your area. Get his input. If he is a selling dealer also, then buy from him even if you can get the same motor 100 bucks cheaper elsewhere.

Good luck!

If gas consumption is not a real concern, get a carbed engine to keep it simple as possible. If your worried about fuel consumption, get EFI. Buy the longest shaft possible 25"-30" for offshore use on a boat that has these transom heights. If your a gadget gurue, buy one of the outboards like the Optimax or Ficht type (which I know you don't like...)
AND make sure its an "offshore" model. Weather you like 4 stroke or 2 cycle, that's up to you in 150 HP class. Buy an engine thats been in production for 2 or more years so that the manufacturing bugs have been worked out. :D
