I realize the honda is the best but might be a little expensive and heavy. Would the Yamaha be a good choice or stick with Mercury.

Hey Fishmaster, are we talking 2 or 4 stroke here? I'm guessing you're talking 4 stroke. I'm pretty sure you may find some other opinions on "Honda being the best" but they certainly put out a great motor. Yamaha & Suzuki are at the top of the heap as well. You need to look at several different brands/models before deciding. The ratio of weight to rated horsepower should be one thing to consider. Find out all you can about the dealers in your area. Reliable service can be extremely important when buying a new motor. A test ride in a comparable boat/motor combo would be a darn good idea also. Good luck! :)
Backlash

Ahoy, Fishmaster.

Best 4 stroke: Yamaha 115EFI, with the Yamaha powerhead Merc 115EFI a close second.

Best 2 stroke: Evinrude FICHT 115 is the best engine but their service and warranty rep is currently in question. Next, Merc Optimax 115.

Best dollar value: Johnson 115 2 stroke.

The Suzi 90/115 EFI 4 stroke is a great engine, but too heavy for most 115-class boats.

The Hondas are great engines, but heavy; and carburetors are obsolete technology.

I will now take cover, the guys will be after me with axes.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Our rescue squad bought a Yamaha 4 stroke for our dive rescue boat... We love it.. It pushes the boat great and 4 stoke is so sweet and quite...

All I can say for sure is that I recently purchased a 2002 merc 115 4 stroke EFI, and I couldn't be happier. It was also a little easier on the wallet than the yamahas that I looked at. Like Backlash said, be sure to find a reliable dealer...good luck :D

I would be interested in a new johnson 99-2001 115 would I need new controls. I priced out the 2001 2cycle yamaha 90 for $4995 here at iboats. What kind of price on the johnson. I would be interested in any motor 4stroke or 2 as long as its oil injected and not expensive.
