I know we all have opinions as to which this or that is best, but I'm looking for two used downriggers and would like to know other people's opinions on the different models of riggers. I'm tending toward the Big Jon models that tilt up but also have my eye on a pair of Walkers... Please let me know your experiences with any downriggers thanks. Bill Mc

Re: Best Manual Downrigger

I used to use Cannon manuals, before I switched over to electrics. The manuals were easy to use,the price was reasonable, and mounting the bases was easy enough. The only down riggers that I have used are Cannons,so don't really have any input about other brands.

I have the WAlker King Fisherman manuals. They are nice but if you back off the clutch too far the spool loosens up and the depth counter spring will drop down and get sandwiched between spool and housing. My son was playing in my boat and did this. The clutches on Walkers are either grabing or too loose. You have to use your hand against the spool as a clutch to control deployment speed.
The Scotty 1085 Strong arm downrigger is what I wish I went with. They flip up like the Big Jons do.
As far as quality (the very best manual) I would go with Penn 620`s but there swivel bases on older models don`t lock in position good.
Price wise Cannon are the best deal. The Cannon Easi troll is a good deal.
My experience with Downriggers is mainly with Walker. I believe Walker makes a better electric downrigger than they do manual. Walker`s customer service is excellent.

Penn is the one with the real good swivel base and 24,36 and 48 inch rigger poles.I love mine.

If I had to use manuals again I'd say Big Jon's here. Have experience with Cannons, Walkers and older Riveras but prefer the Big Jon manuals.. I run Big Jon electrics so that tells you where my personal preferance is ultimately.
