Looking for a good low-profile baitcaster around $50. Obviously at that price I know I'm not going to get anything fancy but I do want something that is going to not fall apart after a year like my last one did. I've looked at the bass pro brand "tournament series" and a few other odd brands. Thanks in advance. John.

Spend a little more, and go with a Shimano Citica D series, got a new one on ebay for around $75, Totally worth it... thing is going to last. Fast gear ratio,powerful,easy/long casting, one turn spool removal, looks great. Cabelas reels are usually daiwa's, or? You Should usually be able to match it to a name brand reel.

Thanks for the advice! I have a shimano spinning reel (nothing fancy, just a fairly inexpensive one) and I really like it. I agree that shimano is a quality brand and should last me a long time. I look into it. Thanks.

I was lucky enough to get a Quantum baitcaster reel as a gift and I think it's a pretty smooth-running reel. They have models from $30-$200 in price.

The only issue I have is backlashing if I don't press my thumb down just prior to the lure hitting the water.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Of course I'm sure I'll get used to it pretty soon as the Michigan weather only recently became warm enough for me to fish the normal 3-5 times/week.

I haven't always heard the best things about quantum's lower price stuff but I'll check out there lineup anyway. I'm mostly looking for something solid that is going to last, and I'm willing to give up some nicer/fancy features for that. I think I should be able to find something like that in the $50-$75 dollar range, right  ??

And btw capri1987 good looking out on that deal on that shimano, after a quick ebay scan, that seems like a really good price!! Especially since MSRP on those things is like $120!

The backlashing problem is all with the thumb.lol.It took me about a hundred casts and the tensioner knob next to the handle was undid about half way.I tightenned it up the whole way,and could cast without my thumb. But as you get used to it,you have to use your thumb to loosen it up,just a lttle at a time.I still have it at about half, but can cast to whatever I am looking at.With my thumb though.lol.Practise,practise,practise.

I am not much of a baitcaster guy, but have heard many of times that you should get the best quality you can afford. Much more important than spinning reels. Higher-end dis-continued models might be in your price range. My son got a Quantum Energy PT in your price range, this spring. Diawa and Shimano brands are worth researching their models. There should be no shortage of reviews and comments to find in web searches.

The Citica is great reel. But if you are still stuck with the $50 budget try the Shimano Callisto $49.99. Great little budget reel.
