I have bought three fish finders on Ebay to replace my dead Wide Eye Humminbird. It worked great until it died and recently bought 3 more on Ebay. What would be good for 95% lake & 5 % Salt water fishing on a 21 ft 4.3L Mercruiser Marathon Weekender. Lakes are in Georgia and range from 10 -150 ft. I bought the following

Wide Eye 100
Wide Portrait
300TX

Does anybody have any experiences with these finders and what would they use in my situation.

Thanks
Chuck Neste
Atlanta, Georgia

Lake Allatoona, Lake Lanier and Savannah river fishing

I have two Wide Portraits and a Wide Optic. The Wide Portrait is a model year behind the 300TX. The portrait equivelent is the 400TX. The 300TX is the equivelent of the Wide Optic which is same model year as Portrait. They all use the same transducers (3 beam). The Wide Optic/300TX has smaller screen than Portrait/400TX. The main change in the TX model year, is a slightly better display. All three share same frequencies, so can only run one, at a time on boat. The diagnostic menu should show hours on the unit. If I had to choose one, it would be the Portrait, for the wider screen.

I have been happy with mine, but fish freshwater only and relatively shallow water. Finding/keeping a good transom location, such that it reads reliable at plane, has been a challenge at times.

Hello John,

Thanks for the information. I bought the 300TX because it will currently work with my transducer ( Wide Eye) The 300TX can work with an older dual beam transducer (model DHS-W only); however the fishfinder will not show left/right fish location. If this transducer is being used, leave the menu set to “tri-beam”.
When using a dual beam and tri-beam transducer together with a switch, leave the menu set to “tri-beam”.

Since the 300TX will work as per the manual, I decided to buy the Potrait.

Humminbird XT-6-TB-90P High-Speed Transom Mount Tri-Beam Transducer for use with Wide Optic, Portrait, Panorama, Paramount, 300TX, 400TX, Tour Series. Includes 20 feet of cable.
Humminbird XPT-6-TB-90 Transom mount tri-beam transducer, 20 ft cable. This transducer is used with plastic mounting bracket. Used with the WIDE OPTIC, WIDE PORTRAIT, WIDE PANORAMA, WIDE PARAMOUNT, TOUR SERIES, 300TX, 400TX.

Thanks
Chuck Neste
