Best course from Shelter Isl to Sound?

I've been doing some reading and it looks like the only way to get from Shelter Island to the LI sound is to go past Orient PT, or all the way around Plum and Great Gull islands. I read where the water there is really rough because the depth goes from 100+ feet to 15 feet so quickly big waves are pushed up in the "sluceway". Is there an inlet that connect the Peconic bays to the Sound that I do not see? Is it rough going to go past Great Gull to get to the Sound?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Mark

if the weather is safe enough to go on the sound in that area its not that bad<br /><br />when the tide is at full flood it moves past all the areas really fast a good 5+ knots and i have seen small whirl pools at times<br /><br />on my 20 ft i would be more worried about the sound than the short trip through there<br /><br /><br />when motoring on the J-24 in the past we were only makeing about 1/2 knot over the ground if are timeing was bad enough <br /><br /><br />tommays
