I have found Seloc here and Clymer at a local dealer. Which is best or is there another? Based on some good advice from this forum it looks like I am going to be doing a carb rebuild. Thanks again.

Best?See if the local dealer will order you the original service manual from Johnson/Evinrude.It's what he uses.

DHP

I have both OMC and Seloc. I favor the OMC for clarity, layout and content.

Mark

I've got a couple of Clymers because that's the only thing I could find around here.

They are OK ... they could be better. I've never seen an OMC or Seloc, but I'd be willing to bet the OMC is the best.

I have the Seloc and Clymers. I favor the Clymers. The Seloc's advice seems to be very practical but is too general for me. The Clymers is more likely to have a picture or figure that covers a engine of similar hp to yours. It is more comprehensive.

Both suffer from a need to cover so many different engines that sometimes it is difficult to find the section that covers your engine.

While I don't have the manuals in front of me, the sections on the carbs describe 1) removal, 2) disassembly/reassembly, and 3) adjustments. There is a bit of advice about how to clean and what to be sure to replace. There is not much wisdom, for example, about problem areas to focus on that this forum is so good for.

I, also, wonder whether I should add, sight unseen, the OMC service manual to my growing library.

Thanks for the info guys. I contacted all of Pauls recomondations and the only one that can help me with my year/HP is Ken Cook but they want nearly $80.00 for a service manual. Is this what I have to pay for a 20 year old manual... reprint... Thanks Again! Really enjoying this forum!

Hey Rock, it's a '80 model 75 hp, right? If so, the service manual appears to be $40.00. That's the going rate. Definitely the OEM manual is the best.

Rockchalkjayhawk, the outboard wizard has been a good sourse for me in years past and the last copy I ordered for 150-200HP in the year I needed was about 40.00.......

The owners manual and accessories catalogs aren't very useful at all. The parts manual has it's moments (it has breakdowns and the part numbers of everything), but the service manual is the one you want. There's no need to buy all four books.

Ken Cook, see Paul Moir's post above. They list manuals available for model #'s J75ELCT, J75ELCTE, J75ECT, & J75ECTE. Also, as Paul said the service manual is the one you want and the Parts manual is good for breakdowns and OEM part numbers.

Hey Rock, you're right! Just double checked the Ken Cook site, $78.00. Wow, that's a lot of cash. I ordered a service manual for my motor '77 140 hp last year and it was $40.00. I guess just like gas prices and everything elso, service manuals are going up in price too!! But almost double!! I'd keep looking elsewhere

I agree $80.00 is alot for a manual. But you may save that if you can perform 1 repair job yourself. What is your dealer's hourly rate?

We are going to $70.00 an hour this spring, and as in the past I encourage my customers to do all they can themselves (even talk them through it).I only expect them to pay me for what I can do that they can't.

DHP

Wow, that's pricey! Somehow I was thinking you had a 1980 75hp. They're $40 at kencook.
Oh, I remember now - I had checked your old posts.

Thanks again everyone. I guess I'm going to pony up the $78.00 or go with the Clymers... More questions to come I'm sure.
