Best 2 stroke oil for less smoke?

I have a Blackmax 200 with the oil injection removed. I'm running 50:1 Quicksilver 2 stroke oil as a premix. Flipping around Youtube the other day I found a video of a guy who swears by Amsoil and was showing a reduced amount of smoke. So...if I'm at idle or trolling speed, +/- 2-3 mph, what oil is best to limit the excessive smoke? At speed it is not as much of an issue because 1) I'm outrunning the smoke, and 2) it does not seem to create as much smoke above say 2,000 rpms. It's almost like it is running rich at lower rpms and then leans out if that is possible. I know oil injection is supposed to compensate for that to an extent but the system was removed before I bought the boat.

Any of the synthetic blend oils will help reduce smoke.

I ran Quicksilver Premium Plus in my 175 Black Max.

A lot of the Amsoil products are not TC-W III certified. I would not recommend any of those.

Make sure your fuel mix is fresh and exactly 50::1. Remember, every day some of the gasoline will evaporate, leaving extra oil.

Amsoil oil is fine for your outboard they have never rated there oil tcw. FYI the new E-tec oil from evinrude also is not rated tcw

When you're running at speed, a lot of the exhaust gets pulled out of the through-hub exhaust right into the water. At idle or trolling speed, a lot of it comes out the exhaust ports further up the back of the leg, above the waterline. This is also part of why there seems to be less smoke at higher speed.

I agree that synthetic blends tend to smoke less, that was my experience on my old 3cyl 70hp Merc.

Flyingscott, are you recommending he run a non-approved oil in his motor?

Do you know better than the OEM, who recommends TCW-III approved oils? Do you offer a warantee for him if he takes your advice and has engine issues?

Does Amsoil offer an engine-repair warantee?

Just some obvious Qs.

Yes Amsoil does warranty your engine against their oil failing. I have used the 100-1 pre-mix and had good success with it. I use amosoil currently not at 100-1 because I put the VRO back on and use Amsoil injection oil. This is my experience with it take it or leave it.

BRP XD100 is a very good oil too. Full synthetic, but I would still recommend 50:1 as premix

Something else to keep in mind, some, if not all oil injection motors regulate a different amount of oil depending on the motor rpms. My 87 70hp runs 80:1 at idle, but then bumps it up to 50:1 at WOT. If you are bypassing the oil injection, it is inherently going to be more smokey due to running 50:1 constantly.

BRP XD50 and XD100 are not TWC 3 certified, but being engine manufacturers oils, I would not hesitate for a second to use them. They probably exceed the TCW 3 spec by a big margin

Interesting. I just looked at a 5 year old jug of XD50 that I ran in my merc 50 for a few years.
It says on the jug suitable for motors "that specify TC-W3 certified oils"
But, it doesn't have the TC-W3 logo.

I just checked and XD30 and XD50 are NMMA TC-W3 certified in Canada.

I'm not concerned, I will continue to use it, just found the wording interesting.

Last time I looked at the jugs of XD50 on the shelf, I didn't find a TCW-3 rating on it. However, I too would not hesitate to use it. But the cost difference between it and the XD100 is not much(7 or 8 $), so I would buy the synthetic XD100.

TCW-3 is a 20 yr old spec, and a for a lot of engines, DI for example, the spec isn't up to what those engines require in a oil. Since BRP and Mercury know what their engines need, they are not going to market oils that just squeak by the TCW-3 spec. Why should they waste money on certifying a product for their engines? 3rd party brands of oil are a different story, some meet the standard, others exceed it by varying amounts. How much? Ever play Poker, Blackjack or the Slots? YMMV

Hard problem to avoid with 50-1 premix, I'm afraid.
Personally I liked to see a little smoke when I had my 150 and 200 mercs. Was reassuring. Amsoil by all accounts is good stuff. Fully synthetic low ash should help, but isn't cheap.
Yamalube synthetic 2-W is good oil too.

I always liked the smoke. Mosquito control, and nothing beats the aroma of good TCW-3 after its burnt. Sweeet!
