Berryman's Carb Dip vs. Painted Merc Carb

I saw a post on this awhile back and I couldn't find it by searching.

I'm going to be rebuilding my 2 BBL Merc Carb (1389-8940) which is sporting the factory black paint job. If I dump this in the current edition of Berryman's Carb Dip overnight, is this going to strip the paint, leave it intact or leave a gooey mess that will take hours to finish cleaning off?

I'm not looking to save the finish. I'm really just trying to figure out if the paint is going to cost me extra work. I'm picking up a new boat on Saturday so I need to finish up this rebuild so I can get Ol' Faithful up for sale.

Wish they didn't paint them in the first place!

Thanks!

Your going to have to repaint. Any gloss black works

The paint is there to keep the carb from getting corroded. If you've ever had a carb on a hot rod or boat that sits in a humid environment they tend to look like crap with corrosion after 5-7 years.

Thanks for the responses. My real question is how much of a mess is the old paint going to cost me? Is it going to strip off cleanly or will I be sitting there for 3 hours with a toothbrush when I take it out of the dip?

And I guess the paint makes sense...they don't know where the boat is going to operate. In AZ we forget about a lot of the corrosion issues when our boats sit unused in dry, dry air 99% of the time. Not draining the cooling system is the biggest offender I see here in the Desert Navy...

I have not used the solvent you proposing nor do I have the same Carb-- But I would say the paint turning to goo is unlikely.

-Painting over whats their after allowing any carb cleaning solvents to evaporate is likely to work OK.

I have used Gumout jet spray on a 1983 Quadrajet with no problems -- From what I recall the paint stayed in tact.

I used it and did not paint afterwards. But, I am a lake and non-salt boater.

My carb has been great since the rebuilt for 10 years post dip and rebuild.

Can you not just strip it and clean it by a less offensive means ?
