Bent tilt locks

I noticed today that the tilt locks ( I think this is what they're called), the things that keep the engine up out of the water even when it's lowered by the "up down" switch on the throttle ('93 yamaha 250) were bent out as if there was a huge weight on the engine.

I was told to lower the engine with the tilt locks locked to put the hydraulic lifters in the "tubes" to protect from salt. Is there downward force on the engine when lowering the engine with the tilt locks on? Would this cause the locks to bend? I thought once the engine was resting on the tilt locks, the hydraulic lifters just lowered with no weight on them. What happened here? Should I not lower the engine on the tilt locks... HELP!!! Confused!

Re: Bent tilt locks

hello
this is common. yes while trimming down not only does engine wieght push down but the tilt ram will pull it down as well if you continue to hold the down button after the trim rams are retracted it will try to bend the arms. good luck and keep posting
