here is a question, is the trim tab motor and solenoids able to be disassembled and repaired? it seems that a solenoid is stuck. if i press the port tab control, both tabs go down, when the starboard control is pressed only one tab moves. ive switched the lines and the opposite happens. has anyone worked on these units?

Re: bennett trim tab problem

If you send it back to bennett, They'll fix, or repair it... No Charge....
You can usually find "Tabman", over at boatered.com... He'll fix you right up.....

Re: bennett trim tab problem

CKJR,

I'm Thomas and I work for Bennett Marine in the Client Services department.

It sounds like you have one solenoid valve that ISN'T closing properly, so when you operate the other trim tab control it moves too. This can happen if there is some trash keeping the Solenoid Valve Plunger from seating properly on top of the Valve Seat. From your description it sounds like the Green Wired Solenoid Valve (Stbd tab) is the culprit. Please check it out by unscrewing the Green Wired Solenoid Valve off the Motor/Pump assembly. The Solenoid Valves are only attached HAND TIGHT, since they have an o-ring to provide the proper hydraulic seal. Keep in mind the Plunger/Spring assembly in side the Solenoid Valve ISN'T captured; so be careful not to lose it when you unscrew it!! Best thing to do is unscrew it and tilt it over to the side, so the Plunger/Spring assembly will not fall out in the bilge. After you get off please take a look in the Valve Pocket. You will find an o-ring on top of the White (kind of pink looking in the ATF bath) Valve Seat. If you press down on one side of the Valve Seat with your finger, it will tilt up so you can pinch it between your finger and thumb. After you take it out you will find another small o-ring in a grove on the bottom of the Valve Seat. Now, please take a look in side the Valve Pocket for trash. Also, check out the Valve Seat, o-rings, & the black pad on the Plunge for any type of cut, crack, hole, &/or trash that shouldn't be there. After you have completed this inspection, reassembly the Solenoid Valve in reverse order HAND TIGHT ONLY! This is very important, since you can over tighten and damage the Valve Seats. Also, replacing the Valve Seat Assembles can sometimes cure this problem too, so contact me at trimtabs@earthlink.net and provide me with your mailing address and I will mail a set to you at No Charge.

I look forward to your findings!

Sincerely,
MJ Thomas
Bennett Marine, Inc.
Client Services
www.bennetttrimtabs.com

Re: bennett trim tab problem

That's great service. A great product too. I have a 1974 boat that has a set of Bennetts and I'm sure they've been there since the boat was new(ish)... almost thirty years later they still work perfectly.
