bendix/starter problems...

Ok here is the deal, a couple weeks back my bendix stuck inside the starter and would not come out to hit the fly wheel when i cranked on the motor. so i got some wd 40 sprayed it in the starter/bendix shaft and let it sit. now it pops out hits the fly wheel makes a loud tick like the bendix teeth and the flywheel hit some how and immediatly goes back down. i tried a new battery, bought and installed a starter solenoid, still no go. I cleaned the spark plugs cause someone said dirty plugs could thow the bendix off. no luck. soooo i took both my batteries wired then together so i had 24 volts wired them to the starter and turned the key and there she went! the bendix went up hit the fly wheel no loud tick and everything worked great. on a regular 12v battery no go. the bendix pops up then goes back down.

if this helps any... i can get the motor started but its a pain, once it starts it runs great all day, then when it comes time when i need 3-5 seconds of cranking and or cold start. no go. i know its not a compression problem cause when to motor runs it runs great..

the motor is a 25 hp evinrude, 1990.

Re: bendix/starter problems...please help

check the voltage at the starter motor terminal while cranking. If you have 10 V or more, and the starter doesn't engage, rebuild or replace the starter.

i have a volt meter on my dash and when i crank on it, it appears it falls below 10v hard to tell tho. but, the starter engages everytime, its just the bendix goes up then kicks back down.

You need to measure the voltage at the STARTER while cranking.

so if i measure voltage at the starter and get below 10v. i need a new starter?

the starter is needing more power to turn(thats why the 24v works)..Starters take lots of power and good contacts. Look at how small they are and how big the engine that it is turning.

Just had the same trouble on my 90. Thought i had other other troubles but replaced the starter and all was good. Found a used one at a boat shop $50..

Do you have the 2 batteries connected in series (1) or parallel (2)?

Not necessarily......Low voltage at the starter can be the result of a low battery, bad/loose cables or connections, worn solenoids and of course, high starter current draw. If you have low voltage to the starter motor while cranking, compare the reading to the voltage at the battery terminals while cranking.

Get us this measurement, and we'll go from there.....

Re: bendix/starter problems...

I measured the voltage on the starter while cranking, its kinda confusing because there is 1 post on the bottom half of the starter.... so is what i did was put the black on the ground and the red on that post going in to the starter. did i do it right? the meter said 10-11 volts. that would be the only way? because when im not cranking there are 0 volts.

any ways im pretty sure my starter is good?

If you have 10-11 volts while attempting to crank, and the drive gear refuses to stay up, the starter is at fault. (This is assuming that the starter is bolted up correctly).

Re: bendix/starter problems...

check start mounting bolts. if not tight, the start will misalign, and do that.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

Be sure the cables area connected to the correct battery post. crossing cables, usually blows the rectifier, and can blow more.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: bendix/starter problems...

inspected the cables and put sand paper on all the connections. still no go. its gotta be the starter. now my question is, there is this big bracket that holds on the starter. it looks to me that i might have to take that off to get to the starter, BUT if i have to take that off i have to take off the flywheel the carb and all this other crap. how does the bendix come apart from the starter?? there is a nut on top of the benbix but every time i turn that the bendix turns? It looks like if i can get the bendix off the starter can come down outta that bracket, thus me not having to take apart my whole motor....

Re: bendix/starter problems...

There should be 3 bolts to take the bracket off.....1 above the carb thats a stud with a nylon lock nut.....then 1 below the solenoid and 1 top right...you should not have to take flywheel or carb off....I did one about 2 weeks ago...you may have the throttle rod also on the bracket held with a U clamp..there are 2 of them one in front and one behind the rod...

the bendx has a hex head under it..you put a wrench on that and then remove the shaft lock nut on the starter shaft on top...

disconnect your battery when doing any work like this....

Re: bendix/starter problems...

Once you remove the starter, take the end cap off and inspect the brushes. If excessive wear or burnt connections are not apparent, give the brushes a tug and check the lead integrity where the lead enters the carbon brush....Then look for any commutator bars burnt differently than others and get back to us.....Commutator bars are the flat contacts on the armature....
