Bendix rope starter binding on retract?

Was working fine before I removed it and put it on a different head. Caused by not enough tension? The rope won't retract tight against the body but the spool is fully wound.

Is there a way to increase tension without removing it from the body?

Lubricate what?

Maybe I should clarify, when I let the rope retract quickly it becomes loose on the spool and binds against the powerhead, but if I keep some tension on it as it retracts it goes back smoothly.

might partially R & R starter assembly (may be just installed too tight). Diff. from the 9.9 assemblies, but recall it's possible to tighten the 9.9 assembly a little too much (can bind).

Do you have the correct size cord on it.If it's too thick it can bind up.

Loosen mounting screws...Pull the cord until the starter pawls engage,...holding it in that position,THEN tighten the mounting screws. (May need a helper!)

Something has to engage the flywheel ,correct? The object is to have everything centered before tightening! I havn't worked on every model from day one....just interjecting what I have found to work on various pull start outboards. But most of my experience is on the old stuff. Enlighten me...if not starter pawls what DOES engage the flywheel?....a pinion set up like the old OMC Lawnboys? You still want everything centered before tightening.

Look at the photo in post # 5.

My bad!..... Too new for me I guess! Bad teeth on the pinion gear then? Or gummed up shaft? Is the gear plastic?

spool and sleeve might be binding, similar effect (spool binding) if that center pulley screw is set too tightly in the older assembly SA describes. Also possible the spring isn't loaded properly (as a result, spool doesn't rewind tightly enough). Believe the basic procedure for changing rope calls for turning the center screw or bolt (spring retainer) 20 turns or so counter clockwise, temporarily locking the spool in place, installing the new rope, then letting the spool slowly rewind clockwise wrapping the rope. Spring should have the right tension at that point. Assuming nothing else is binding, it should work fine.

Recommend finding the instructions, and having then handy when doing this. Spring assemblies are dangerous.

The issue seems to have resolved itself mostly after lots of pulling.
