The lower portion of the lower unit is bent. If you were to sight along the bottom of the boat from forward to aft you'd see that instead of pointing at 6 oClock, the seg is bent such that it's .. well.. 5:45. The outdrive it only bent along this axis and is not twisted in any other way. I am tempted to just leave it as it is, but am wondering if this may be causing the slight uneven keel I've been experiancing while underway.

If I attempt to bend this back into form, how can I go about doing that without breaking the skeg off? I know alluminum is very brittle.

I was able to bend mine back, but it was only at 5:35 :) , but if you do try, and it breaks, you can always put on the "skeg guard" as a replacement. I ended up doing that after I found a rock later in my adventures. Actually, I find it looks better than the original anyway.

I have found a guy though here in Southern Ontario that can fix/replace a skeg WITHOUT having to dismantle it, for around $160Cdn. He does REALLY good work. He even fixed a small outboard that had broken in 2 at the engine/shaft seem, and now it's stronger than when it was new.

its actually not worth messing with from a mechanical standpoint, its only an issue if it bothers you. but your right, cast AL does not like to bend twice.

You can bend aluminum cold. Use two hand sledges. Support the 'bent' area with one, and hit the outside area with the other. You have to 'work' the metal and not expect it to bend on one hit. After 10 or 15 minutes working the material back and forth, you will reach an acceptable skeg. As stated before, it's not critical, just acceptable.

Searay's approach is what worked for me. Takes more time than I expected, but it's close to straight.

I had a small bend in my skegg and tried to straighten with an adjustable wrench, it snapped off cleanly, so i put on a Skeguard which looks nice and will protect it from the inevitable future impacts.
