My '57 Evinrude 18 was running rough the end of last season and I suspected it was running on only one cylinder. I made sure the points were gapped correctly and the coils looked good but I went ahead and installed 2 new coils and plug wires over the winter. I haven't run it yet as I am restoring the pressure tank and haven't got that reassembled yet.
I saved the coils I removed as they look almost new but I don't know when they were replaced by the former owner.

How do I bench test them to see if they are good?
