does anyone do this? this boat has always tended to run a little hot at low rpm and i keep it in the water most of the time so changing the impeller is a bit of extra work.

Yes either a belt or crank driven pump can easily be installed. I set one up for a guy and used the pump in the drive just for the P/S and engine oil cooler. 'nutcase

I did the same on my setup - the engine had a belt driven pump and I installed a 1.25" thru hull fitting with a strainer. The hose from the outdrive I simply re-routed back through the transom with another fitting. To flush I would use both muffs and a hose in the strainer. Here's a couple pics:

Go with the crank driven pump. there easy to mount, and easy to change the impeller.

i like the strainer idea, do i need to do a through hull or can i remove the impeller from the drive and draw water that way?

It is a pretty small hose that you would have to pull through - I would go with the thru hull fitting with a seacock valve. More volume of water and more efficient cooling.
