I have a 1982 Sea Ray 16ft. with a Mercruiser 120 with same era outdrive. I took the outdrive off for winter and am now about to put it back on, and grabbed hold of my bell housing and notices that it shifts back and forth, I would say approximately 1/8" to 1/4". I decided to pull off the trim senders and replace them because I read that if only your trailer switch works, then one has gone bad, so I decided to replace both. Anyways, back to the question, when I pulled off the trim senders I noticed that the hinge pins are actually moving left and right. I believe that they are tight, but will not know until I get my little tool, but can anyone tell me if this movement is normal? Thanks, once again, in advance!

Re: Bell Housing/Hinge Pins Question

1/8" to 1/4" is a LOT of space. There are thin fiber wear washers between the gimbal ring and the bellhousing. If you actually have that much wear, you probably need a new bellhousing and gimbal ring because the fiber washer was missing and the metal to metal contact wore the surfaces down.
Look in the service manual for the drive, it will show them.
