The shifter in my OMC 800 is a bit stiff when I put it into forward. It does not seem so bad when I pull out the shift lever to eliminate the shift cable.

Sooooooooo, I disconnected the shift cable at the converter box and the lever still has a stiff/binding spot when you first push it out of the neutral position. I have now dismounted the controller from the side panel, thinking that I either have a stiff cable or the inside of the box needs some grease.

Without have been there/done that before, I'm a little hesitant to split the control box open lest all kinds of springs and cams come popping out.

Any advice before I split the case? This is a box that you pull the lever out to disingage the shift function.

I'm a tolerant individual, so if you swing from both sides, it's OK by me... don't ask, don't tell. ;)

I'm listeniing too, as I want to do the same as a simple matter of maintenance. The manual is a little weak in this area.

KaGee, it may just be that I have to force feed some TriFlow or equiv down the cable ways like I had to do with my 'extra tight' (hey how come we can't italicize anymore) tru course steering cable.

But until I get a looksee inside the virgin control box (was born in late '79 and never molested) I won't know which it is, 'extra tight' cables or dry, unlubricated cams and levers.

most of the shift lever boxes ive taken apart are fairly easy and not complicated. there is usually neutral detent ball and springs but nothing that usually jumps out and rolls into the crack in the floor and ends up in china!! just take it apart in a well open space or put a sheet under it to catch the balls if they decide to pop out.

Ok, lilmandavis. A lot of help you are. So all the balls and springs pop out on my towel/sheet, where in the Devil do they go back to?:p

Ok all, i'm gonna take one for the team and tear into it tomorrow.

I need to do that same job. It maybe easiest to work with a partner to help you keep your balls in place. Let us know how you make out (working on that boat). We already know you're bi.

I took my Cobra box apart once while the boat was in the slip and I forget what, but something did jump out, right up over the side windshield & into the water (Murphy at work). If I were to do it again, I'd think about putting the control box in a bag before removing the final screw & splitting it. That way nothing's gonna get away...

I had a diagram for my shift box but unfortunately don't remember where I got it:'(. Maybe it came with the new remote cable I put in? I bet someone on here knows where to get a diagram for your control box. Perhaps Seahorse to the rescue?

Yer no fun at all!

Didn't get to opening the box today, but tomorrow I should get to it. I'll give a report. I don't have it in a bag but it is on a big towel.
