I know the question has been asked quite a bit about putting a bed liner into a Aluminum Jon and I have pretty much made up my mind to take on this project this upcoming break. Yet I ran into a few problems. First what do you do with cover the aluminum under the ribs? Or under the benches? For the ribs I can see brushing under them but for the benches? Also how bad is it for water to sit on the aluminum after a rain.. since missed spots would leave lows for small amounts of water too sit.

Thanks for the help

Kevin

Re: Bed Liner

The water sitting on the aluminum after a rain isn't going to do much more the the water touching the aluminum on the underside of the boat. :D

What is your goal, to seal it? Bedliner adds weight, so I would maybe try a different approach. If it leaks, coating the inside with bedliner will only do so much, as the pressure a leak point sees may be enough to cause the water to come in and form blisters in the bedliner and eventually leak. If it were me, I would determine leak points and fix those leaks, and paint any surface I didn't want exposed. In all reality, the water isn't going to do much of anything to the exposed aluminum (maybe if the water is salt there could be a problem). Good luck...

Re: Bed Liner

If you want a non-slip flooring or sound proofing coat the inside. If you are sealing leaks or adding a protective layer to the hull, coat the outside.

Trying to seal leaks from the inside won't work because of the ribs. Leaky rivets will allow water to enter the uncoated area between the rib and the inside of the hull. Your best bet is to repair any leaky rivets and then coat the outside for protection. That's what I'm planning on doing.

The weight of the material shouldn't be a major concern. Durabak weighs 10 lbs per gallon which covers 60 square feet with 2 coats.
