Folks no matter what trailer i replace my bearings on I always get grease comming out from the back side of the hub.

I put new seals in the hub, yet grease still leaks from the rear of the hubs- is this normal?
I have bearing buddys on the trailer.

Thanks for any tips
-John

Re: Bearing replacement problems

Perhaps a thicker more tenacious grease would prevent this. I wonder if your grease is breaking down under heat and/or pressure when driving. Check out something else with your garage.
Ross

Well I am using Penszoil Marine Trailer Bearing Grease- its your typical bearing grease.

I am assuming this is not normal then to see grease comming from the back of the hubs?

Are there any special ways to put the seal on?

Thanks for the reply.
-John

I don't know what you've got there J, but the ones I purchase come with a wee picture of how to put them on. Try to find a web site with a diagram of your particular brand of bearing. I have no idea what there called over there.......
Ross

Are you pumping to much grease in J? On my last repair I noticed the axel shaft was grotty were the seal should run. Clean with a wire brush and polish with some 400-600 grit paper so the seal can run on a good clean surface.

J,

Folks with bearing buddies tend to overfill them. Make sure the weep holes on you b-buddies are not plugged.

Re: Bearing replacement problems

Weep holes are not plugged- im going to pull the bearings out tommorow and have a look, I will pick up 2 new seals and clean the axle where the seal sits, otherwise im not sure what else to do.

I dont see the point of having bearing buddys if the grease I pump in quirts out the back side within 10 miles. Im wondering if I should simply convert to a regular dust cap and repack every year instead, as I stand now I have to do that anyways since the rear seal leaks.

Thanks for the replys everyone.
-John

Re: Bearing replacement problems

John - I have to dunk my dual axle trailer completely in salt water every time I launch and recover. I keep the Buddy bearings full and yes some will be forced out of the inner seal. No problem - - every couple of times out I give the Buddies a shot. Been doing that for many years and have yet to have a bearing problem - - I don't pull them every year either.

Howard
