To remove the inner bearing from the hub (drum) do you have to use a slide hammer or some sort of puller? I assume the seal has to be taken out first but wasn't sure if the bearing was pressed in or just held in by the seal.

The inner bearing is held in by the seal. The races are pressed in.

Re: bearing removal?

There is a gap between the inner seal, the race, and the bearing, and the seal is the only one holding the bearing inside. Using a long stick, like a chopstick but may 1/2" wide and flat oat the end (do not use metal tip), lightly punch on the side of the bearing until it swings out or in. Do not punch on the bearing's rollers. When you punch the bearing's side, it will fight itself out of the seal. When the bearing has swung, from here, you will be able to see the innner side of the seal. Use a huge flat screwdriver and hit the seal several times until it comes off. The seal will be practically destroyed. It does not matter. Just get the seal out of there. The bearing will come out.

the races in the hubs are a press fit and will require pounding out with a punch or slide hammer if you can grab them

putting them back in with a press is best but if your carefull the new races can be taped into place you have to be carefully they are in all the way and flat

Installing the races into the hub requires a bearing driver. If you don't have one, one can be easily fashioned using a proper size cast iron pipe coupling, pipe nipple and a cap. Without one you risk warping or cracking the race. Hubs have recessed areas inside which allow a drift punch to be inserted to drive out the old race.

I've used a large socket and a vice to press them in.

You can use the old race and a hammer to drive the new races into the hubs. just make sure you use the old race thick side in so you can knock it back out from the other side after seating the new race into the hub.

Bski to remove the inner bearing I use a old wooden hammer handle and drift the bearing and seal out by placing the wood handle onto the front side of the bearing and giving it a swift hit with a 3lb mallet, bearing and seal drop out without any damage. To reinstall bearing just place back into hub and tap grease seal back in until flush with hub flange, don't try to whack the seal back in it will get destroyed, just tap it in lightly working it back in using a circular pattern.

Re: bearing removal?

One should never reuse a wheel bearing seal as the lip is invariably damaged during removal. These are one of the least expensive parts on the trailer and when damaged can lead to water intrusion, roller/race pitting, eventual seizure and spindle damage and/or breakage. It simply is not worth the risk. Over cautious you say? Ask the guy who has just lost a wheel due to spindle breakage. Chances are that wheel and spindle tumbled down the expressway and had to be dodged by more than one vehicle not to mention spoiling an outing.
