bearing question

While removing the dust cap to check the bearings on my trailer, I noticed a small hole had somehow gotten punched in the cap. Once off, I saw some rusty residue inside the hub. After cleaning and repacking, I replaced the cap as I couldn't get a replacement that late at night. Should I replace the cap before submerging the trailer again, or is there no need to be in a hurry? Also, does this seal the bearing area to make it completely watertight. In case you hadn't guessed, I'm a novice! Thanks for any help.

Re: bearing question

Yes, yes and yes. Replace it before dunking. It is a watertight seal (moderate interference press fit).

Unless it's a beetle hub, they have a hole through the cap to run the speedo :D

Re: bearing question

Or fix the hole until you get a replacement.

Several ways of doing that. Clean it and silicone both sides of hole. Or put small stainless nut and bolt through hole with washers. Or blind rivet. or bond piece of plastic over outside with Sikaflex 292 or similar.

As Dunaruna says - it needs to be watertight for long bearing life.

Several ways of doing that.......
Duct tape should work until you can get a new one. Auto parts, farm stores, trailer shops, marine centers, possibly even megamarts should have them.

Re: bearing question

Are you guys saying that the 'dust caps' are water tight ? I find that hard to believe. Water resistance yes, but submerge them for any length of time and water is sure to seep past them. There is no seal just a crude metal cap pressed into a non-precise opening.
